The program attracts students of diverse backgrounds, who want to study in New York City, a global nexus of sustainability, policy, finance, and technology. The program situates the cohort of some 60 students in both Columbia University – one of the world’s premier academic institutions – and in the Earth Institute, a university-wide research center that takes an interdisciplinary approach to addressing the world’s most important sustainability issues.
The Earth Institute, Columbia University
The Earth Institute brings together the people and tools needed to address some of the world’s most difficult problems, from climate change and environmental degradation, to poverty, disease, and the sustainable use of resources. Faculty and researchers of the Earth Institute designed the program’s curriculum, and now teach courses in the program. The Earth Institute also offers students opportunities to learn from and interact with world-class researchers, including the scientists of the world-class Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a scientific powerhouse in the earth sciences, and an integral part of the Earth Institute and Columbia University.
Located just 15 miles north of Columbia’s main campus in Morningside Heights, Lamont-Doherty offers students access to the facility, its scientists and research, and important archives, which include the first seafloor map and the world’s largest collection of deep sea cores. The Earth Institute also offers students internships, a professional development program, and alumni services after graduation.
