The Columbia University Libraries system is among the country’s ten largest academic libraries, with 7.5 million volumes, 84,000 serials, as well as extensive collections of electronic resources, manuscripts, rare books, microforms, and other nonprint formats. The collections are organized into twenty-two libraries, each generally supporting a specific academic or professional discipline. Lehman Library on Columbia’s Morningside campus is the primary library associated with SIPA.
SIPA Computing supports the computing needs of the SIPA curriculum, students, faculty, and the administration. SIPA computing provides computing services that complement those of Columbia University’s Academic Computing (AcIS). The expansion of SIPA’s computer resources in the last decade has reflected the transition of international affairs and public administration from a qualitative to a quantitative science. The labs, in addition to being used for word processing, have also developed into an instructional facility providing students with the skills needed to compete in the current job market. Students learn the fundamentals of research design, measurement, and data analysis using statistical packages. Computer-based simulations supplement classroom instruction in economics and security courses, and all students can use the facility for hands-on training in financial management, cost-benefit analysis, and accounting.
Recreation: Dodge Physical Fitness Center
The tri-level fitness center located in the University Hall section of the Dodge Fitness Center is our most popular facility. The facility is available and supervised approximately one hundred hours per week and features 7,500 square feet of state-of-the-art aerobic and anaerobic exercise equipment. The fitness area is equipped with steppers, cycles, treadmills, rowing machines, Versa Climbers, elliptical trainers, weight training circuits, and free weight equipment. All of our cardio equipment and the strength training equipment was recently replaced or updated. Two rooms with approximately 5,000 square feet of hardwood floor exercise space are available for classes in aerobics, body sculpting, martial arts, yoga, and other scheduled activity. The main gymnasium floor (9,000 square feet) features an all-purpose surface to accommodate basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer, floor hockey, and virtually any other activity. The one-tenth of a mile running track is comprised of a molded steel frame and a Mondo rubberized surface, and our locker rooms provide comfort and equitable accommodations for men and women.
